Electricity Usage

I've been obsessively recording our daily electricity usage since we moved in to the house in Jan 2004.

YearUnits (kWh)Comments
20046524Started with standard electric heaters as only heating. Installed a heatpump. Added ceiling insulation and under floor insulation.
20055176Using Solar PV's to run all house lights.
20065160Added solar hot water system and wall insulation.
20075401Experimental double glazing. Had a baby! Replaced washing machine with a more energy & water efficient front loader.
20086500We're currently tracking towards an end-of-year total of 6500 kWh. We're heating the babies room and doing a lot of nappy washing.

In 2007 we were averaging just over 14 kWh per day (8 kWh per day in summer up to 24 kWh in winter). 2008 is looking more like averaging 18 kWh per day - so we're heading in the wrong direction energy-wise. Although we are still well below the 8000 kWh threshold that makes us eligible for the "low user" discount.

Our electricity usage includes all heating and cooking, plus the usual TV's, radio's etc. Plus the electric lawnmower and the web server that serves up this site. It does not include the weather station and it's laptop, which run off my solar PV panels.

For comparison; Michael Lawley's EcoHouse (four person living) averages 4.89 kWh per day. He uses a wood burner for heating and has a much better designed and insulated house.
